The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) has introduced the Non-CO₂ Programme, a funding initiative aimed at advancing technologies that mitigate non-CO₂ emissions in the aviation sector. This programme is part of the UK's broader strategy to achieve sustainable aviation and address climate impacts beyond carbon dioxide emissions.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Lead Applicant:
  • Must be a UK-registered business or research organization.
  • Project work must be conducted within the UK, with the intention to exploit results domestically.
  • Must align with the UK's Aerospace Technology Strategy and the ATI's Non-CO₂ Technologies Roadmap.
  • Project Team Members:
  • Can include UK-registered businesses of any size, academic institutions, charities, not-for-profit organizations, public sector bodies, or research and technology organizations (RTOs).
  • Must perform project work in the UK and plan to utilize the outcomes within the country.

  • Percentage of project costs covered varies based on organization size and project type; specific details to be provided in the official competition guidance.

Scope of the Programme:

The ATI Non-CO₂ Programme focuses on industrial research and technology development projects that address challenges in reducing non-CO₂ emissions from aircraft. This includes exploring the characteristics of sustainable aviation fuels, advancing aircraft technologies to minimize non-CO₂ emissions, and enhancing data and operational knowledge. The programme builds upon the ATI's Non-CO₂ Technologies Roadmap, which outlines strategic priorities for mitigating aviation's non-CO₂ climate impacts.

Application Process:

  1. Outline Proposal:
  1. Submit an initial application to assess project alignment with programme objectives.
  1. Applications are reviewed by the ATI, with progression decisions made by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Innovate UK (IUK).
  1. Full Proposal:
  1. Upon successful evaluation of the outline proposal, applicants are invited to submit a detailed application.
  1. Funding decisions are made based on the comprehensive full proposal.
