Project Size:
Share of up to £30 million

Introduction

The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) Round 6, led by Innovate UK in collaboration with the Department for Transport (DfT), aims to accelerate the UK’s transition towards a net-zero maritime sector. This initiative is part of the UK government’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, which is focused on establishing the UK as a global leader in clean maritime technology design, development, and manufacturing.

For this round, the UK government has allocated up to £30 million to support pre-deployment trials of innovative maritime technologies. These projects will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from ships and port operations while ensuring commercial viability and operational efficiency.

The competition provides a unique opportunity for UK-based companies to secure funding for technological advancements in the maritime industry and contribute towards achieving the UK’s net-zero emissions target for 2050.

Competition Overview

The CMDC Round 6 competition is divided into multiple funding strands, each addressing a specific aspect of clean maritime technology development. This article will focus on Strand 1 – Pre-Deployment Trials (Non-Smart Shipping Focus).

Strand 1: Pre-Deployment Trials

Objective

The primary goal of this strand is to fund the design, development, and testing of innovative maritime technologies before full-scale deployment. The focus is on:

  • On-vessel technologies (clean fuel adoption, emissions reduction systems, propulsion improvements).
  • Infrastructure technologies (port electrification, shore-side charging, hydrogen/ammonia bunkering solutions).

The competition encourages projects that have already completed feasibility studies and prototype development and are now ready for real-world testing in controlled environments.

Key Requirements

To qualify for funding under this strand, projects must meet the following criteria:

  1. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Focus
    • The technology should demonstrate a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions or other air pollutants from maritime operations.
  2. End-User Collaboration
    • Each proposal must include at least one representative end-user, such as:
      • A vessel operator (shipping company, ferry service, cargo transporter).
      • A port authority or terminal operator.
      • A technology provider collaborating with an industry partner.
  3. Technology Testing Limitations
    • Testing for on-vessel technologies should be limited to factory trials or dry dock testing.
    • In-water testing is NOT allowed at this stage; instead, projects must focus on ensuring operational readiness before deployment in real-world conditions.
  4. Realistic Commercialisation Plan
    • The project must outline a clear commercialisation strategy showing how the technology will be brought to market, including:
      • Business model viability
      • Market adoption strategies
      • Regulatory compliance requirements

Expected Project Outcomes

Successful projects should provide:

  • A detailed technical plan for scaling and integrating the technology into real-world maritime operations.
  • Data and evidence supporting the potential for lifecycle emissions reductions and environmental impact improvements.
  • Economic and commercial viability assessments, highlighting the potential market size and return on investment.

These outcomes will be crucial in securing future investment and ensuring the long-term adoption of clean maritime technologies.
