The Opportunity Unveiled

Innovate UK, in collaboration with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), proudly opens its doors for applications to its "Improving Observation Capabilities of Biodiversity in UK Waters: Phase 2" competition on Monday 24 July 2023. With the competition closing on Wednesday 6 September 2023 at 11 am, this initiative offers a share of up to £750,000 for innovative projects that can enhance the observation and monitoring capabilities of marine life in UK waters.

Objective of the Competition

This competition aims to stimulate: The development of end-to-end marine monitoring systems that can improve the extent, condition and human pressures on marine assets. It particularly encourages projects that show significant innovation in real-world marine monitoring programmes, with the final goal of strengthening the observation capabilities of UK waters and advancing the understanding of ecosystem services flows from marine assets.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be UK-registered organisations of any size. The proposal should clearly identify which part of the marine monitoring system the project will focus on, and demonstrate how the innovative technology will be integrated into an end-to-end monitoring system and used in real-world marine monitoring programmes within the next 5 years.

Project Proposal:

Proposals should vividly outline how the project will advance the observation capabilities of the UK’s waters, and contribute to the improved assessment and evaluation of the status and risks to natural capital assets. Projects are to be carried out entirely within the UK and the results exploited in or from the UK. A total grant request must not exceed £250,000.

Competition Entry:

By entering this competition, you are participating in a competitive process. The competition concludes at 11 am UK time on the closing date.

Responsibilities:

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate a clear route to integration into real-world marine monitoring programmes, and show significant potential to benefit the UK economy and environmental sustainability.
