Innovate UK is investing up to £3.7million to support innovation projects developing digital therapeutic extended reality (XR) solutions for mental health services. The competition aims to fund projects that can be applied and trialled within a 12 to 18months R&D cycle, with the potential for large-scale adoption in the UK's formal mental healthcare ecosystem.

Funding

  • Project Size: Total eligible project costs must be between £200,000 and £300,000.

Eligibility

  • Who Can Apply: UK-registered businesses.
  • Project Type: Must undertake industrial research and development.
  • Project Focus: Projects must develop digital therapeutic XR solutions for mental health, targeting moderate to severe conditions.
  • Exclusions: Projects not using immersive or XR technologies, or those focused on mild conditions in the general wellbeing space, are not eligible.

 

Scope

The competition seeks projects that:

  • Apply Extended Reality (XR): Utilize technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, haptics, holograms, immersive software, and immersive audio.
  • Target Moderate to Severe Mental Health Conditions: Provide solutions that improve impairment, disability, and distress for individuals experiencing significant mental health difficulties.
  • Aim for Adoption at All Clinical Levels: Develop solutions applicable at any point in the care pathway, with ambitions for regulatory approval and large-scale adoption.

 

How to Apply

Applicants should provide:

  • A detailed project plan outlining the design and features of the XR solution.
  • Evidence of how the solution will be applied and trialled within the 12 to 18 months R&D cycle.
  • Demonstration of potential for large-scale adoption within the UK's mental healthcare ecosystem.
