Description: This Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition, under the Zero Emission Generators (ZE-Gen) programme, is focused on developing renewable integrated replacements for fossil fuel generators in Official Development Assistance (ODA) countries. It is managed by Innovate UK on behalf of the Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), as part of the Ayrton Fund and Transforming Energy Access (TEA) programmes.

Funding Type: Procurement

Project Size: Projects can range between £500,000 and £1 million, inclusive of VAT.

Project Goals:

  • Demonstrate capability, applicability, and scalability of integrated renewable alternatives to fossil fuel generators.
  • Projects should be safe, flexible, affordable, reliable, low carbon, and scalable.
  • They must be implemented in an ODA eligible country within 6 months from the start date.
  • Targeted uses include commercial, domestic, public sector, or humanitarian scenarios where fossil fuel generators are the primary or backup electricity source.
  • Solutions should include energy storage capabilities and utilise local supply chains.

Eligible Countries: Projects must be installed in ODA eligible countries, which include various nations across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Indo-Pacific ASEAN, and Pacific Islands.

Portfolio Approach:

  • Aiming for a diverse range of projects across different organisations, technologies, and regions.

Research Categories:

  • Prototype development and evaluation, including prototyping, demonstrating, piloting, testing, and validation in real-life conditions.

Exclusions:

  • Projects that are not original, out of scope, or duplicate existing work.
  • Those covered by existing commercial agreements.
  • Projects not contributing to energy affordability, security, and reduced carbon emissions.
  • Non-ODA compliant projects or those that do not consider Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI).
  • Improvements to fossil fuel generators, combustion technologies, or solutions inflexible to varied use.
  • Large scale infrastructure projects are also excluded.
