Individual Project Awards: Up to €10,000,000 per project

Number of Projects Expected to Fund: Approximately 2 Application

Timeline: Opens on 07 May 2024, with a deadline on 05 September 2024 at 17:00

Brussels time. Application Model: Single-stage

Expected Outcomes:

This grant aims to significantly advance logistics innovations to support the decarbonisation of freight transport in a cost-effective manner, with the goal to:

· Achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 within project networks, while maintaining or improving logistics performance.

· Demonstrate clear gains in operational efficiency and environmental impact from implementing the Physical Internet concept.

· Develop logistic concepts that accelerate freight decarbonisation, including the adoption of zero-emissions vehicles/vessels and enhanced multimodality.

Scope:

Proposals should build on existing initiatives (e.g., Connecting Europe Facility, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects), comply with the Digital Transport and Logistics Forum (DTLF) data-sharing framework, and consider the European mobility data space development. The projects will:

· Pilot and Scale Solutions: Focus on digital and physical interoperability and the adoption of zero-emission vehicles/vessels across multimodal logistics networks.

· Demonstrate Systemic Collaborative Solutions: Cover seamless open standard processes and services in logistics nodes, compatibility and interoperability across standardised transport units, and AI-supported dynamic asset utilisation.

· Synchro-modal and Decentralised Solutions: Test and showcase tools for flow compatibility and decentralised inventory management to enhance multimodal transport efficiencies.

· Governance and Data Sharing Models: Establish robust business models and operational frameworks for resource sharing and system optimisation, incorporating elements like Digital Twins for predictive logistics planning.

Specific Requirements:

Projects must:

· Reach Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 by project end.

· If applicable, incorporate satellite-based data (Copernicus/Galileo/EGNOS) and describe AI system robustness.

Strategic Impact:

The initiative will contribute to transforming European transport into a safer, smarter, and more sustainable system. Key impacts include:

· Safety and Resilience: Enhance safety across transport modes, aiming for drastic reductions in accidents and fatalities by 2030.

· Smart Mobility: Accelerate deployment of Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) solutions, improving overall transport efficiency and public acceptance.

· Sustainable Systems: Develop resilient infrastructures for multimodal transport, reducing external costs and increasing system-wide efficiency.

Conclusion:

This grant provides a strategic opportunity for entities capable of integrating advanced technological, business, and governance models to revolutionise the European freight transport sector, particularly in its efforts towards decarbonisation and digital transformation. Applicants are encouraged to leverage existing research, technological innovations, and collaborative frameworks to deliver scalable, impactful solutions.
