Overview
The Department for Transport (DfT), in partnership with Connected Places Catapult, has
launched the 2024 round of the Transport Research and Innovation Grants (TRIG). This initiative
aims to propel early-stage innovations across various aspects of the transport sector, fostering
the development of new products, processes, or services that can enhance the UK's transport
infrastructure.

• Registration Opens: 17th April 2024
• Registration Closes: 21st May 2024
Grant Details
• Funding Amount: Up to £45k per project, covering 100% of project costs.
• Total Grants Available: A minimum of 26 grants across five challenges, including an
open call and four targeted challenges.
Organisational Scope
TRIG is open to public, private, and third-sector organisations, as well as universities and
research and technology organisations. Applicants must be based in the UK, though certain
project components can be outsourced internationally. The end product, however, must be
implemented within the UK.
Funding Challenges
1. Open Call: Up to 3 grants available for innovative ideas that address broad UK transport
challenges.
2. Local Transport Decarbonisation: Up to 7 grants available for projects that accelerate
local transport decarbonisation.
3. Critical and Emerging Technologies: Up to 7 grants available for projects focusing on
technologies like AI, novel transport applications, and digital infrastructure.
4. Nation-Specific Transport Solutions: Up to 5 grants focused on improving transport
and reducing emissions specifically in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
5. Maritime Decarbonisation: Up to 8 grants for projects aimed at reducing maritime
emissions and supporting the transition to net zero.
Project Requirements
• Projects should advance an innovative concept from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
2 to TRL 4.
• Proposals can be submitted by consortia, but a lead applicant must be identified.
Application Requirements
• UK registered company number and office.
• Capability to manage multiple projects concurrently if submitting more than one entry.
